Arizona Night Sky agates all come from Mulligan Peak, a rough mountain west of Clifton, AZ. The specific location was lost for more than 50 years, largely because the terrain is so rough and difficult to reach. It was found again in 2009. The most common and desirable color of Arizona Night Sky agate is a deep purple, almost the color of grape juice. However, this location also yields agates that are lavender and gray. Many of the darker agates will have pink highlights. Banding in these agates is composed of rings of "snowflakes" rather than the more ribbon-like banding commonly seen in other agates. In the darker agates, this unique snowflake banding resembles galaxies of stars swirling in a dark night sky over the desert. These agates are larger than other agates found in this general region, with the smaller ones approximately 1 inch x 1 inch (25 mm x 25 mm), and the larger ones sometimes as large as 8 inches by 5 inches (203 mm x 127 mm). The color, size, and quality of these beautiful agates will enhance any collection.
