In early 2013, Mr. Curtis found 50 - 70 pounds of classic Dryhead Agate in Collinsville, Oklahoma, in a storage barn of well-known fossil and agate collector Bob Hicks. Mr Hicks and his wife Nancy collected this fine classic Dryhead Agate in the fields of Montana, just north of Wyoming more than fifty years ago, and it has been in storage since then. Most of the agate fields are now depleted and closed, so no new Dryhead Agate is being collected.
Mr. Curtis purchased this agate, and cut and polished most of it, resulting in more than two dozen nodules with polished faces ranging in size from 1.5 in by 1.5 in up to 5.5 in. by 4.5 in. These nodules show the classic red and white banding, and many also have orange, pink, yellow and other colors found in the best classic Dryhead Agates. A few nodules may have small fractures.
